Materials and Stitches for Easy Crochet Patterns

To make easy crochet patterns, you will need a few basic materials and knowledge of a few easy crochet stitches. Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials

  • Crochet hook: The size of the hook you use will depend on the yarn weight you are using. For beginners, a medium-sized hook like a size H/8 (5 mm) is a good choice.
  • Yarn: Choose a yarn that is appropriate for the pattern you are making. For beginners, a medium weight (also known as worsted weight) yarn in a light color is a good choice because it is easy to see the stitches. But any yarn weight can be used if you’d like.

Here are a few of my favorite yarns to use for beginner crochet patterns, ranging from four weight yarns all the way up to six weight yarns.

Stitches

  • Chain stitch (ch): This is the most basic crochet stitch and is used to create the foundation row for your project. To make a chain stitch, you will simply pull a loop of yarn through another loop, creating a chain.
  • Single crochet(sc): This stitch is used to create a tight and dense fabric. To make a single crochet stitch, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook.

  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): The half double crochet stitch or hdc abbreviated is one of my favorite crochet stitches since it is slighter larger than the sc and a bit smaller than the dc. Yarn over and insert your hook into the designated stitch, Next, yarn over again and pull up a loop through the chain, giving you three loops on your hook. Yarn over once more, and draw the yarn through all three loops on your hook. This completes a hdc stitch.
