Crocheted blankets are a beautiful way to add a handmade touch to a home during the Holidays. Blankets are a great gift to give to family and friends too! Scroll on down to take a look at some of the best crochet Christmas blankets (all free crochet patterns!) that you can make, to add a little Winter fun to your home.
Stitches, Yarn & Crochet Hooks
Crochet Stitches for Blankets
You can use almost any stitch to make a blanket. If you’d like to make a tighter stitch blanket, in which you’d use something like a single crochet (sc) stitch. If you want a looser one, you can move up to a half-double (hdc) or double crochet (dc) stitch. You could use any stitch you’d choose, but luckily for you, all the free holiday blanket patterns below specify the exact crochet stitch to use.
Yarn for Crochet Blankets
As for the best yarn to use in crochet blanket patterns, it is almost always preferred to use a fiber that is machine washable, such as acrylic or wool. Each yarn brand usually has the care instructions for the yarn listed on the label. I think the yarn being easily cleaned is of the most important factors when choosing a yarn. This way, you’ll be able to keep your blankets looking brand new every Holiday season.
A few of my favorites yarns to make blankets with are Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand, Wool-Ease Thick & Quick by Lion Brand and Red Heart Soft which are all available in a wide variety of classic holiday colors, so you can really customize these blankets to your style. In the list of holiday blankets below, the designers will also specify which yarns they used to make their designs.
Crochet Hooks for Blankets
I also have a favorite set of crochet hooks to use when I am making blankets. If you will be working on a big project like a blanket, then you will want to make sure your hands are comfortable. I highly recommend Tulip crochet hooks because they have a thicker grip on the handle and keep your hands from having aches. Take a peek at my go-to crochet hook set below.
To make it easy for you, each of the blanket designs will have the hook size listed with it. This way, you’ll be able to check to see if you have that size in your hook collection.
