Mountain Pine Crochet Tree Blanket

If you are looking for a winter crochet blanket, then this pine tree blanket is perfect to crochet. It is the perfect throw blanket for cozying up in at your home, cabin, or mountain retreat.

The best part is that this blanket uses easy crochet stitches, which means it is beginner-friendly and quick to work up!

We’ve highlighted the stitches used as well as the yarn you’ll want to make it with below, so you’ll be ready to start crocheting a blanket with trees as soon as you get the chance!

At the end of the post, you can find the free blanket pattern PDF with a graph and written instructions for easy downloading, so you can start making this tree blanket as soon as you get the chance. Enjoy!

About this Crochet Blanket

The entire blanket pattern is worked up with a graph (see image) below. All that means is that for each stitch worked, it will represent one stitch on the graph.

You can follow along with the pattern a couple of different ways

  1. Graph
  2. Written Pattern

When using the graph, if you are crocheting one color and the next square is a different color, that is when you will switch colors.

Or when you are following along with the written pattern, you will change the yarn colors in the blanket when it states to.

By following along and switching yarn colors, you will slowly start to see the crocheted pine trees take form in the blanket pattern.

The Crochet Stitches

I designed this tree blanket with two basic crochet stitches; the half double crochet and the chain stitch, the latter of which was used for the foundation chain of the blanket.

Learn more about each of these beginner stitches below that were used to crochet this easy crochet blanket.

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

The half double crochet stitch is similar to the single and double crochet stitches, but with a few differences. Unlike a single crochet, which does not require a yarn over, a half double crochet requires a yarn over before the hook is inserted into the work.

  1. Yo (yarn over) insert hook from front to back of the designated stitch, yo the hook and pick up a loop.
  2. Yo the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook.

Chain Stitch (ch)

A chain stitch is a simple crochet stitch that often forms the foundation of what crochet stitches are worked into during projects.

  • Make a slip knot.
  • Insert hook into slip knot point first, bring yarn over the shaft of the hook from back to front and grab it with the throat of the hook.
  • Draw hooked yarn through slip knot and onto the hook. This movement will make one chain stitch
  • Repeat steps two and three until you have the desired number of stitches for a pattern. One loop will remain on the hook.

When crocheting this blanket you’ll start with the foundation chain followed by a row of hdcs which are worked up according to the graph.

As you start crocheting this blanket, you’ll find that these stitches will make it easy for any skill level of crocheter to crochet this blanket.

Crochet Materials and Supplies

To crochet a pine tree blanket, you’ll need a few crochet supplies such as yarn, a crochet hook, stitch markers, yarn needle, highlighter (or pen) and paper.

Yarn

When making this throw blanket, you’ll need two colors of medium weight yarn. I used Wool-Ease by Lion Brand in the colors of Wheat and Forest Green Heather. The forest green was the perfect shade for the pine trees! These two colors mesh perfectly to create a woodsy pine tree feel, which is what I was aiming for with this cabin blanket.

You do not need to use the exact yarn I did to make this blanket. Keep in mind if you use a smaller yarn, larger yarn weight or even another style of four weight yarn, your blanket may turn out a different size.

How to Change Yarn Colors

You will also need to know how to change yarn colors in crochet. When I was working the different colors, I dropped the yarn I was using when I switched to the new color and cut it (to weave in later).

I found this was the best option for a cleaner looking blanket.

Crochet Hook

You’ll also need a 6 mm crochet hook size. I used a Tulip Etimo hook, but you can use what you’d prefer, since the brand doesn’t matter when making this blanket.

6 mm (J-10)

6 mm (J-10)

This hook is also known as J-10 (US), 4 (UK) & 6 mm. You can use it with Weight 4 – Medium yarn weights.

If you find that the stitches are working up too big or too small, feel free to adjust your crochet hook to a different size.

Other Notions Needed

There are a few more crochet tools that may be helpful when working up this winter tree blanket, such as a tapestry needle, stitch markers, highlighter, and paper.

  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Highlighter / pen
  • Paper

First, you will need the tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends throughout the blanket. Secondly, stitch markers may be needed to help keep track of stitches when crocheting as well.

Finally, you will need a highlighter and paper to mark off the stitches you have crocheted as you are working up the pine blanket. You will find that this method works both for the graph and the written blanket pattern as well.

  1. I loved this pattern for a baby blanket I did. It was much bigger than I anticipated and had to edit my design once I finished the trees but it still came out great and I’m very happy with the results.
