The crochet lovey blanket is worked in just one simple stitch (learn more about this basic stitch below) and has a finished size of 14″ x 15″ inches. This means you can make quite a few of these in just a small amount of time.

What is a Crochet Lovey Baby Blanket?

A crochet lovey baby blanket is a small crochet blanket that a child can snuggle up with to feel secure and cozy. Lovey blankets are for a baby older than 12 months and should be used with the supervision of an adult at all times.

The Yarn

The yarn we will be using for this lovey is Brava Worsted by WeCrochet & Knit Picks. It is 100% acrylic as well as machine washable and dryable which is a must for a baby blanket that will more than likely get constant use.

It is available in many colors, so you will have a wide range of colors to pick from for this lovey and for the stars you attach. With these, many options, you will be able to create a unique baby blanket that is just your style.

For the example shown below, I used Dove Heather & White for the main blanket.

Patterns Using This Stitch →

This chevron pattern does include some double crocheting stitches which is a decrease to create the ripples, but it is still straightforward to pick up on. Make sure to look over the stitch definition & picture below so you will know how to decrease.

This blanket also includes a single crochet border, but it is optional if you’d prefer this lovey without a border. You could also use a different border for this blanket if you’d like too!

Crochet Stitch Abbreviations

  • dc = double crochet
  • ch = chain
  • dc3tog = double crochet three together {Yarn over, pick up a loop in next st. Yarn over, draw through two loops on the hook} 3 times. Yarn over, draw through the last four loops on the hook.

  • Change sizes by using a staring chain in a multiple of 14 + 3 stitches

The Pattern

To Start: With Color A ch 42 + 3

Foundation Row: 2 dc in 4th  ch from hook, *1 dc in each of next 3 ch, {dc3tog in next 3 ch} twice, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch **, 3 dc in next 2 St, rep from * across, ending with last rep at **, 3 dc in the last ch, turn. (54)

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) 2 dc in the same space as ch 3, *1 dc in next 3 sts {dc3tog in the next 3 ch} twice, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc (from the previous row) ** 3 dc in each of next 2 st, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in top of the turning ch from the previous row, turn.

Row 3: Change to Color B, rep Row 1

Row 4: Change to Color A, rep Row 1

Finishing: To finish the main blanket fasten off color A and weave in loose ends with a yarn needle.

Border

The border of this blanket is optional.

Round 1: Join in Color A in the last st of row 14. sc into that st twice, going down the side of the lovey placing 3 sc’s for each row of the blanket for a total of 42 sc(s) until you reach the corner, sc 3 times in the corner, sc across the bottom of the blanket a total of 54 sc(s) until you reach the corner, sc 3 times in the corner, continue up the side of the blanket for a total of 42 sc(s), 1 sc into the corner that you started in, sl st to the first sc of the round.

Round 2: ch 1, sc 2x into the first st, sc into each st down the side for a total of 46 scs, in the next st sc 3x, sc 56 times, sc 3x in the next st, sc 48 x across ending with 1 sc into the first st you started in with the sc2x of the round, sl to the top of the first st of the last round and fasten off the yarn.

Finishing: Cut yarn with scissors and weave in loose ends with a yarn needle where it is needed.

Pro Tip: Sew on an appliqué to make this blanket extra special. A crochet star pattern would look great on this lovey and the yarn is a perfect match!
