Easy Chevron Scarf Design

I love chevron patterns and was inspired to make this Chevron scarf after I designed my crochet chevron blanket earlier this year.

I wanted this crochet scarf to be a little different and fun, so I created it to have a pull-through space so it would be easy to adjust the fit.

How many times while wearing a scarf, does it move, get tight around your neck and just feel plain uncomfortable? This chevron designed scarf fixes that problem with its adjustable fit!

The Yarn That’s Great for This Keyhole Design

To make this keyhole design work, I wanted a soft yarn that would move easily and not be stiff. I used Lion Brand Yarn Hometown USA yarn in Tweed, which is a chunky yarn that has a soft texture, which makes it perfect for a crochet scarf like this design!

I think you’ll love it too!

If you can’t find the Hometown yarn, you could use any super bulky #6 weight yarn like Lion Brand Thick & Quick or Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn to make your scarf extra warm & thick!

Pattern Steps

To Start: Chain 16

Row 1: Working in the second ch from hook sc the first two stitches together (sc2tog), 1 sc in each of next 5 ch’s, sc 3 times in next ch, 1 sc next 5 ch, sc the last two remaining chains together. (aka sc2tog) turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, starting in the first st sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 5 st’s, sc 3 times in the next st, 1 sc in the next 5 st’s, sc the last two remaining st’s together, turn.

Row 3-30: Repeat row 2

Finishing

Do not fasten off. Ch 1 and sc down the long side of your crochet scarf until you get to the first point.

Sc together the two points (this forms your loop that you will pull the scarf through eventually) and continue to sc up the long side of the scarf to point and down.

Sl st to the top of the first sc and now you can fasten off. Weave in the ends with the yarn needle.

  2. Hello! I’m a beginner, and i’m going to try this with some faux fur i got on clearance. (Yippee!). I don’t see the number of yards of yarn needed, and since i’m not using the yarn u used, im not sure i have enuf. I tried to use the link to see how much yarn is on the skeins of the yarn u used, but i couldnt get it to work. Would u tell me how many yards i need?

      1. Oh nice! That’s just about what i have! Thanks for the additional info, and thanks for the pattern. I will try to post a photo when i finish.

  3. Question – when crocheting down the long sides – do you just go through the holes not the stick he’s? Like if I crocheted 42 rows I would have 42 sc down each long side?

  4. This is SO cute! I made it in a matter of hours, and absolutely love it! The instructions were well written and easy to follow. Krista, you are my new goto for crochet patterns. Thanks!!

  5. Hi Krista,
I am really confused about “sc 3 times in next st” part. When I do that, coming back around, the next row has 2 extra “holes” so the 5 single crochet, 3 in 1, then 5 to follow, ending with the last doesn’t work. After I make the turn, am I supposed to skip 2 of the wholes from the “3 times in 1” hole? Please help. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Katherine,
You may be forgetting about the single crochet two stitches together step at the beginning and end of each row. Let me know if that is it and I can try to help if it isn’t.

      Happy Crocheting!

      Krista

  6. Is there an ad free version of this pattern anywhere? I tried the “Add to Ravelry” links but it just brings me back here. Thanks Krista!

  7. Hi, I can not find the terms for this pattern. Can I sell any scarf I make? I am making the scarf using two strands of yarn. I did not have any chunky yarn on hand.

    Thank you for your response,
    Theresa

  8. I’m a little confused. I used a 10mm N hook and size 6 bulky yarn but at 30 rows it simply is not long enough. It barely touches ends when wrapped around your neck. I used exactly 1 skein too even though it says 2. Do you mean to go 39 rows with one ball and another 30 with the next?

    1. Hi Jessica,

I would suggest crocheting a little looser (or even using a bigger crochet hook). The pattern should be done with 30 rows and 2 skeins of yarn with a finished size of 42″ and a 9″ width.

      Happy Crocheting!

      Krista

  9. Hi,
Can you tell me what the multiples are if I wanted to use thinner yarn but make it just as wide? For example is it a multiple of 7 . Does that make sense? I’m new to crochet but knit, so I don’t know if I am using the correct terminology. Thanks

  10. I’m confused because you are adding 2 stitches in the middle but only decreasing by one per row. I end up with more than 5 stitches to go once I do my 3sc in one sp in subsequent rows.

  11. Is there a video of this pattern? I love the scarf but can’t figure out what I’m supposed to be doing with the pattern. On row two My 3 AC in same stitch is lopsided and I end up with4 stitches before I am to sc2tog at the end of the row. Help!!!

  12. I love this pattern. I purchased Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in Hoyas and had trouble coming up with something to use it for. This pattern is perfect for it! Thanks so much for sharing it!

  13. Hi Krista,
I made this scarf using an ordinary double knitting yarn & a size 6 hook.
Remembered to convert to UK stitch terms.
I blocked it well & it looks great, quite delicate & fine.
    I’m making a 2nd one.
Thanks for sharing this lovely pattern.

  14. Hi Krista!

I love this scarf and I’m trying to make it, however, I am having trouble with the pattern. I am assuming that I am suppose to turn it at the end of each row and it’s making a “V” pattern. When I get to row 3 after I sc2tog and sc the next 5 stitches I still have 3 stitches before I get to the top of the “v” where I am to sc 3 times. Row 2 came out correct so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

    Thanks so much!
    Ronda

  15. Are you holding two separate balls of yarn together to make a thicker yarn? Or is it just a bulky yarn? N is a large hook size…

    1. Hi Besty,

sc2tog’ means to use single crochet to join two stitches together. It is a way to decrease (make the item smaller.)

Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook. Hope this helps 🙂

  16. I am as confused as Jennifer… Price of cake until I get to the second part of the last step. I can sc in each space down the long side to the point but then what two points am I joining? Then after that I’m assuming I continue to sc in each space around the scarf? Please help, I’d like to make this as a gift for some one by next Wednesday. Thanks!

    1. Hi Soraya,
The two points are the bottom of the V’s the Chevron Pattern makes. You are correct you sc in each space up around the other side of the scarf. Hope this helps!

  17. I am so confused is this pattern written any other way? It isn’t making any sense to me help!!! I like this scarf a lot.

  18. love the scarf. I am working on it but not sure how you are counting row?! I am at almost 30 rows and just barely halfway so I am going by the 42″ in length…well close to it. Thanks for the pattern!!

      1. I used a P hook and it was definitely long enough and looks very nice except when I go to put it on…I assume you wrap it twice but now it wants to curl 🙁 should I “block it.”
