Fabulously Fall Crochet Fringe Scarf

Fall Crochet Scarf
This easy scarf is oh-so-cozy and has fun fringe trim along the edges, which makes it perfect for those chilly fall days that are just around the corner!

The Yarn
To make the Fabulously Fall fringe scarf, I used my favorite Lion Brand Yarn Vanna’s Choice, which is a 100% acrylic medium weight #4 yarn in the color Kelly Green.
If you’d prefer a different color of Vanna’s Choice, there are many color-way choices for everyone to pick from on their website or Amazon.

If you don’t have Vanna’s choice on hand, you could use any worsted (medium) weight yarn and get the same result as mine, such as Caron Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft.
The Stitches & Techniques for This Scarf
Crochet Stitches: The whole scarf pattern consists of half double crochets (hdc) and chain stitches, which are both easy to learn. If you’d like a refresher course on these crochet stitches, I’ll link up my tutorials on both below.
These easy crochet stitches make crocheting this scarf simple and perfect for beginners.
Half Double Crochet
Patterns Using This →Fringe: I added fringe to the ends of the scarf to add some interest. Use our fringe tutorial to learn how to add it to scarves or other crochet projects too.
Make The Scarf Without Fringe Too!
If you’d prefer to make this scarf without fringe, you can do that too. Just skip the fringe instructions, and you will have a simple scarf to wear that is fringe-less. Sometimes less is more.

Fringe Scarf Pattern
Skill Level: Intermediate
Materials
- 2 skeins of Lion Brands Vanna’s Choice Yarn
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Crochet hook size I 5.5 mm
- Yarn needle (to weave in the ends)
Crochet Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- hdc = half double crochet
- rep = repeat
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk = skip
Notes
- The scarf pattern is written in standard US terms
How to Crochet a Scarf With Fringe
Body of Scarf
(each row is 7″ long and the finished size of the scarf is approximately 50″ excluding fringe)
Foundation Row: ch 21
Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from the hook hdc, hdc in every ch across, turn. (20)
Row 2: ch 1, hdc in the first st, * skip 1 st, hdc in next st, go back to the st you sk and hdc in that (criss-cross), rep from * across, end with 1 hdc in last st, turn. (20)
Row 3: ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in every st across, turn. (20)
Row 4: ch 1, hdc in first st, * skip 1 st, hdc in next st, go back to the st you sk and hdc in that (criss-cross), rep from * across, end with 1 hdc in last st, turn. (20)
Row 5- 77: repeat rows 3 & 4 for pattern. (20)
Row 78: repeat row 3, do not fasten off (20)
Border
- Working in the same st as last hdc ch 2, hdc again in same st (corner). Working along outside long edge of scarf hdc 1 time in each row for a total of 78 st’s (78)
- Working in same st as last hdc ch 2, hdc again in same st (corner), working on the short edge of scarf hdc evenly across for a total of 20 st’s. (20)
- Working in the same st as last hdc ch 2, hdc again in same st (corner). Working along outside long edge of scarf hdc 1 time in each row for a total of 78 st’s (78)
- Working in same st as last hdc ch 2, hdc again in same st (corner), working on the short edge of scarf hdc evenly across for a total of 20 st’s. sl st to top of the first hdc of the first border (20)
- Fasten off and weave in ends throughout scarf with a yarn needle
Attaching Fringe
- Wrap green yarn around a 6″ book or piece of cardboard to get 12″ even pieces. Cut along the top of yarn to get 12″ pieces of yarn. Take pieces of yarn and fold in half.
- Repeat the steps below 8 times, evenly on each side of the scarf.
- Insert the hook into the first stitch to be fringed, and put the 4 pieces of cut yarn that were folded in half onto the hook.
- Pull yarn through the first corner stitch.
- Take yarn ends and pull through the loop that was made with the crochet hook to secure.
- Trim ends of fringe to your desired length.
- You have now completed your fringe scarf!

Help! I have started the scarf twice now and a I am ending up with a curved scarf. Not sure what I am doing wrong…..

I would recommend going up a hook size for your foundation row. It sounds like you maybe are crocheting tightly on your initial chain which can cause a curve.

Found you from Pinterest… just the pattern I’m looking for a scarf for a friend (male) and going to make another for his son as a matching father and son scarf for the coming fall and winter .. thanks for sharing .. it’s so easy to follow and work up fast.. using Just my stripe from Lion Brand (Licorice and the boy will be wild blueberry)and it’s so far so good and the colors changing not girly at all haha Will share in instagram when I’m done !

Helli! I’m Working in this scarf pattern. I may be over thinking it, but when I get to the end I have 2 stitches left. Am I to just HDC in the last stitch and then go back to the previous, skipped stitch, snd do a HDC (as was done for the whole row) or…just HDC in the final stitch, leaving the next to last stitch skipped??

You should have one stitch left to hdc into and you should have 20 hdc’s total. How many do you have?

Tried this pattern last night love it but not sure about the stitch 2nd ch from hook I end up with an extra stitch.. do I actually crochet into the base of the last stitch? Thanks Denise

You will crochet into the 2nd st from the hook, work the pattern across and you should end up with 20 stitches.
