Are you looking for a pair of easy crochet mittens to make? If so, then this beginner-friendly mittens pattern is the one for you! Crochet mittens are a super cute and cozy accessory that you can wear when it gets cold out.

To learn how to crochet these mittens, you will need a basic understanding of some basic stitches, as well as knowing how to crochet in the round. Which means if you are an adventurous beginner, then this crochet pattern is for you.

Free Mittens Crochet Pattern

Materials to Make Crocheted Mittens

To make these mittens, you’ll want to have a four weight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook, as well as some notions such as…

  1. yarn (four weight)
  2. crochet hook (4 mm)
  3. stitch markers
  4. a yarn needle
  5. measuring tape.

Yarn

To make these easy crochet mittens, I used a four weight yarn aka worsted weight yarn. You can use any 4 weight yarn as long as it is not a thinner four weight, or your mittens may turn out smaller than intended.

Here are a few of my favorite yarns for mittens.

Crochet Hook

I used a 4 mm (G-6) crochet hook, but if you need a different size to reach the gauge, that is ok too! My favorite hooks are tulip etimo, but any brand of crochet hook will work perfect.

Notions

You will also need stitch markers to mark your place at points in the mitten pattern, a yarn needle (aka tapestry needle) to weave in ends and a tape measure to measure gauge if you’d like.

Crochet Stitches + Techniques

To crochet these mittens, you will need to know a few basic stitches. You will need to know how to crochet in the round for the main mitten pattern, and you’ll also be working in the back loop of the stitch for the cuff.

We will also be skipping stitches to make a thumbhole, which is easy to do, so don’t be intimidated by that part. I know I was when I was a beginner crocheter, considering crocheting mittens for the first time.

Example of the Cuff Ribbing when working in the back loop of a stitch

I’ll go over each of the stitches and techniques below, so you’ll be ready to crochet a pair of mittens when you are finished reading.

Single Crochet (sc) (sc tutorial)

  1. Insert hook from front to back in the second chain from the hook or designated stitch
  2. Bring the yarn over (Yo) the hook and pull the yarn back through the chain (or stitch) from back to front (2 loops on hook).
  3. Yo and pull through both loops on the hook.

Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog): this is also known as a single crochet decrease. (sc2tog tutorial)

  1. Insert hook into designated stitch
  2. YO (yarn over), pull back through the stitch
  3. Insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull back through three loops

Half Double Crochet (hdc): (hdc tutorial)

  1. Yo (yarn over) insert hook from front to back of the designated stitch, yo the hook and pick up a loop.
  2. Yo the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook.

Working in the Back Loop (bl): (hdc bl)

  • Insert the hook through the bl only of each stitch, rather than under both loops of the stitch.
  • Complete the stitch as usual.

Let’s Get Started
