Tools & Materials Needed
To make the houndstooth designs below, you’ll need a few crochet supplies and tools on hand.
- Crochet Hook
- Stitch Markers
- Yarn Needle
You may find that you won’t need a stitch marker, but I like to use them to keep my place in the pattern I am working. The stitch marker also helps to keep the stitch from unraveling if I ever sit it down to take a break.
How to Crochet a Houndstooth Pattern Stitch
A houndstooth stitch in crochet is made by alternating a double crochet and single crochet stitch with two contrasting colors row after row. Below, I will refer to the yarn colors as Color A and Color B.
Foundation Row: Chain a foundation chain in a multiple of 2 with color A
Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as single crochet), In the 3rd chain from the hook double crochet, *single crochet into the next chain, double crochet in the next chain, repeat from * across the row, turn.
Row 2: Change to Color B, Ch 1 (counts as a single crochet), double crochet into the next stitch, *single crochet into the next st, repeat from * across, turn.
Row 3 to ?: Repeat row 2 changing colors from A to B for each row.
It is really that easy to crochet a houndstooth pattern!
