The Yarn That’s Perfect for This Ripple Pattern
It all started a few weeks ago, while yarn shopping at Michaels that I came across some beautiful colors from Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice line in some excellent blue & gray hues!
I originally went in to grab one skein for another project, but walked out with 7! The proof is in the picture. I knew they would look perfect as a ripple blanket with an ombre effect to it.
Vanna’s Choice
This yarn is made by Lion Brand, and is a Weight 4 – Medium yarn.
Fiber: 100% Acrylic
Yardage: 156m / 171 yds
Hook: 5.5 mm (I-9)
Substitute: Lion Brand Heartland
In case you were wondering… Ombre means “The gradual blending of one color hue to another, usually moving from light to dark.”
How The Ripple Stitch in Crochet Is Made
I started my blanket with white yarn, working 15 rows and decreased the number of rows I made with each color added. Furthermore, the whole afghan uses the half double crochet stitch and half double crochet decreases. Learn more about each stitch below.
Stitches Used
Half Double Crochet (HDC):
- YO (yarn over), insert hook from front to back of the designated stitch, YO the hook and pick up a loop.
- YO the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook.
Half Double Crochet
Abbreviation: hdc
Difficulty Level: Easy

Half Double Crochet Two Together (HDC2TOG):
- YO, insert hook into designated st, YO the hook and pick up a loop
- YO, insert hook into next st, YO the hook and pick up a loop.
- YO and draw through all loops on the hook.
These beginner stitches are what makes this afghan a super quick pattern to work up. Overall, I am in love with how it turned out, and I hope you love it too!

Krista
When I cast on 90 stitches I don’t get 30inches. How many more do I have to cast to get this width
Hi Jane,
I am not sure. I would just keep on casting on until you reach 30 inches. 🙂
Krista
Do we stop with 5 sts at the end no matter if the section of the pattern is completed or should it work out evenly that we finish the hdc in 5sts & then there will be 5 left.
Hi Rachel,
You will finish the repeat with 3 hdc’s in a st then be left with 5 stitches to finish the row up you will dc once in each of the next 3 st then hdc2tog the last 2 sts. This will be for every row. 🙂
Hi krista, disregard my previous question, I found the full pattern on ravelry. Thank you.
Glad you found it! 🙂
Thank you for sharing this lovely ombre blanket pattern. I have asemble the yarn needed and Im looking forward to making it for my daughter as a gift. I have just one problem, row two is covered by a picture of a stich tutorial. Is there anyway you can give me those instructions? Thank you.
Love the colors! Also, thank you for the foundation row modification. I can’t make it just 30″ wide so starting with 129 instead (and a J hook). Hoping to post pics when it’s done. I’m having a hard time putting it down!
You are welcome Sandra! Happy Crocheting!:)
I just adore this design Krista! I’m not looking for a new project just yet, but I have pinned and shared for later 🙂
Thank you so much!!!
Krista this is really beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful work with us.
Thank you Alissa! 🙂
Your work is beautiful! I am back to crocheting after many years away from it, so sort of learning all over again. Your patterns and tutorials are super easy to follow and are helping me refresh my skills. I have saved this pattern to try since I need to teach myself the chevron/ripple effect. I LOVE your style, colors and the fact that you love & rescue dogs makes me love you too! I have 3 dogs & 4 cats, plus a neighbor cat that lives at our house part time (because we take good care of her). I’m an animal magnet, which can sometimes make crocheting a bit challenging. Thanks so much for sharing your talents, I look forward to seeing new patterns for my collection.
Hi Cam! Thank you for the kind words! It really means a lot to me and it sounds to me that you probably have some dog & cat hair in your projects just like me! 🙂 hehe 🙂
Wow, Krista! Love your design… , I’ve become a fan of ombre ripples lately, so I think I’ll give it a try in greens to match the ‘deco’ in my living room, I’m sure it’ll look great!
Thanks a lot for sharing!
Angelica that sounds pretty! I would love to see it when it’s done! 🙂
