The Yarn
I used Red Heart Soft Yarn for this 4 color crochet blanket and let Sam pick out the colors. He did a pretty good job with his color choices and I really love how this colorful throw turned out.
Red Heart Soft is a 100% acrylic yarn that is available in a wide variety of colors, so it will be easy to crochet a blanket that is uniquely you.
Red Heart Soft
This yarn is made by Red Heart, and is a Weight 4 – Medium yarn.
Fiber: 100% Acrylic
Yardage: 5oz solids, 4oz heathers (varied)
Hook: 5 mm (H-8)
Substitute: Red Heart Soft Baby Steps
I did not follow a set of rows for each color. I changed the yarn colors when the color was up in the skein, which was about every 18 rows.

Hi Krista, I was checking out the patterns for your blankets. I will try the single crochet one. I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I have been crocheting for about 50 years. I have never had my crocheting stretch until recently. The last two I made stretched after washing, so disappointing, do you have any idea why this may happen. Used the correct hook and followed the half double crochet pattern. Thank you for any help.
Hi Annie,
It may be the type of yarn you are using. Different fibers wash differently, this may help: https://easycrochet.com/how-to-wash-a-crochet-blanket/
I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please ask!

Where are the free patterns? If I’m paying for the pattern I will get it from a website where customers have rated the pattern
Hi Millie,
At the top of an individual blog post page if you click “skip to pattern” you will find the free blanket pattern, or you can scroll down to find the pattern. I do not have an ad-free PDF pattern for sale for this particular blanket, so I am unsure what you are referring to.
Also in the main menu of my blog, the first section is labeled “free patterns” and can be clicked into to find free patterns sorted by whatever you wish to make.
Hopefully, this helps.

How do you weave in the tails left behind when you change colors?
Hi Jordan,
I weave them into the project with a yarn needle.

Hi there..I’m a newbie and I hope this isn’t a stupid question but what rows do you change the col of your yarn? Thanks!
Hi Michelle,
I just worked until the end of the skein of the red heart soft which ended up being about 18 rows. You can use the striped pattern generator to create a unique striped blanket if you’d like too! 🙂
Happy Crocheting!
Hi!
I am about to start crocheting this for my first blanket I’ve ever made. Is this yarn soft? I am not a huge fan of “scratchy” wool or yarn and I want to make sure this yarn is soft to cuddle up in.
Hi Abby,
This yarn is very soft. Red Heart Soft is a great yarn to use for an extra cuddly project.
Happy Crocheting!

I made mine wider, but my blanket is still hardly wider than my lap. What were your final dimensions?

The finished size as shown is approximately 50 inches x 25 inches which I made as a small blanket for my son.

I finished an afghan in the Harley Davidson colors for a son for Christmas this past week.. I did a dc with a J hook. I agree this is a great way for a beginner to learn. I am not a beginner but sometimes it is a good way to crochet and not have to think.
I love your bright colors.
I love easy projects
I’ve tried making this piece several times now and every time I start and get to row 5 my work continues to curl – Suggestions on how to fix that? Did yours do that in the beginning and then straighten out as you moved forward? Love your work!
Hi Samantha,
The curling could be anything from the type of yarn used or even how tight the stitches are. It is OK if it does curl because you always block it later. 🙂 Thanks for the kind comment! <3

Hi Krista,
Crochet it is! The yarn arrived today, always an exciting moment :-). Colors are just like I imagined, I’ve already done the math and chained 300 in turquoise. I’ll probably end up going with DC instead of SC because my yarn is thinner than the one you used.
Lovely project, it has made my day so much brighter already!
Cheers,
Johanna
I am so glad! Have fun! DC will work up faster too which is always great. 🙂 Happy Crocheting.

Good advice to use double crochet for the blanket.
Hi there, thank you so much for inspiring my next crochet project – I will make a blanket (either knit or crochet, not quite sure yet) in exactly the same colors you’re suggesting – they’re absolutely gorgeous.
Happy hooking and cheers from Berlin
Johanna
You are so welcome Johanna! I am so glad you are inspired!
Happy Crocheting (or Knitting!)
