Crochet Market Bag Pattern

This free crochet tote bag pattern is fun to make and makes an excellent accessory for the beach! Just think, no sand-filled bags! This market tote is also suitable for a trip to a farmers market or the grocery store.

Keep on scrolling to find the free crochet market bag pattern and get started today!

Yay!

It Can be a Crochet Beach Bag Too!

Tote bags are always fun to make, and our family always seems to get a ton of use from them. I also designed the Milo tote, which is also a great one to take to the shore too!

I did finish this tote earlier in the month just in time for my daughter to tote her books back and forth to the beach! And It worked perfectly!

I was thrilled when the sand fell out through the bottom of the market tote bag, which meant less mess in my truck and beach house!

The Yarn That Is Perfect for This Crochet Tote Bag!

If you wish you could quickly line this tote with fabric to make it more useful for smaller items that you may want to carry. And since the design calls for cotton yarn, you can throw it in the wash too!

I used Lily’s Sugar N Cream Yarn, but any cotton (4) yarn will work! Live wild and make one of each lined and unlined! πŸ™‚

See the yarn below to pick your favorite colors!

Ready to Get Started?

Now that we know all that is needed to crochet his project, it’s time to get started! If you are ready to make this simple tote, then scroll on down to find the full free crochet bag tutorial!

Happy Crochet Bag Making!

    Hi

I am on round 9 and I still just have a huge circle. Is that what I should have?

      Hi Amy,

The increases stop at round 6 so after that round it shouldn’t lay flat like a circle anymore. If you are on Facebook there I have a group that is dedicated to helping with EC patterns here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/easycrochet/

      Happy Crocheting!

I am also having trouble understand round 6. Should it read CH1, sk 1 st, dc in the next st? It is driving me crazy!

      Hi Carol,
No It should read like written. πŸ™‚ The chain 3 is to bring the height of the round to where it needs to be and the chain 1 is the first st of the new round. πŸ™‚

Help! Round 20 says to repeat Round 19. But after Round 19, there are no ch 1 sp, because we are not ch 1 between the 2 sc.

      Hi Angela,
I fixed that! I should have read sc in every st around and sl st to the top of the first sc for the rounds after 19. πŸ™‚

      Thanks!

Hello! I love the bag but it is only 11” deep not 15. I don’t understand why. I’m using a j hook.

    Hi Krista,
BEAUTIFUL BAG!! I’m excited to start this project! Dumb question for you – This bag takes two of the big balls of Sugar n’ Cream yarn, or two of the smaller ones? (Two plus the one for the band and handle, obviously.)
My JoAnn Fabrics is running a sale on yarn so I’m going to head over and I want to get the right stuff!

    Thanks for the great pattern!
    XO,
    Katie

      Hi Katie,

Thank you for the nice compliment! πŸ™‚ This pattern uses the smaller balls that are 200 yards I believe. πŸ™‚

      Hope you enjoy the pattern!

Working on it right now! Though I’ve made a couple mistakes that have changed it a lot! I must’ve increased my rounds by a couple because it is wider than yours. Also i used an arcrylic yarn (black) i had on hand so it has an interesting texture. Makes it look more like a fashion bag than a grocery bag. Oh well! Thanks all the same.

I bet it looks awesome with the black yarn! I usually stay away from it because it is so hard to see all the stitches. You are brave! πŸ™‚

I am making this beautiful bag and so far I absolutely love it! I have a question about the handles. I guess I crochet very tight stitches. My handles are starting to spiral. I tried looking at your pictures and was wondering if a double crochet might work as well as singles and help the twisting. This is only the second pattern I’ve ever used, so I’m very open to suggestions. Thank you so much.

      Hi Paula,
Thank you for the kind words and I am so glad you like the bag so far! I would guess that it may be the type of yarn you are using (if its different than suggested) or that you are crocheting tight like you said. You could try a Dc I think it would work just as good. πŸ™‚
