The Yarn That’s Perfect for This Basket
To make my chunky crochet basket, I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn in neutral colors, so it would blend well with any room it was collecting yarn in! This yarn is a super bulky #6 yarn that is available in a variety of beautiful colors.
I think any yarn color would be nice for this basket, and I recommend exploring all the different options available before you make your basket. Take a peek at a few of my favorites below.

Want a Sturdier Basket?
I would suggest crochet with a tight tension to make it stand up nicely. I also love working with two skeins of yarn at once and work the pattern as written.
Another great technique is to crochet past the suggested round 9. Repeat Round 9 nine more time and then fold it down inside the basket to make the sides stay firm. This technique will omit the handles, but your basket will be much stronger.

Materials
- 100 Yards of – Lion Brand Wool- Ease Thick & Quick in Barley & Gray Marble or any bulky 6 yarns.
- Size N crochet hook 9.00 mm
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle

- sc= single crochet
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk = skip

- The basket pattern is written in standard US terms
- If you’d like to start the pattern with a magic circle, simply make the ring and dc 10 times into that ring, skipping the sl st step at the end.
- The parenthesis at the end of the steps show the total stitch (st) count for that round.
The Pattern Steps
Round 1: using Grey Marble, ch 3, 10 dc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc. (10)
Round 2: ch 3, starting in the first st 2 dc, 2 dc in every ch around, sl st to top of first dc. (20)
Round 3: ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, 2 dc in every st around, sl st to top of first dc. (work should measure 7″ x 7″ after this round) (40)
Round 4: switch yarn color to Barley, ch 3, starting in first st *dc, sc in next st, repeat from * around. sl st to top of first dc. (40)
Round 5: ch 1, starting in first st *sc, dc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first sc. (40)
Round 6: repeat round 4 starting with the ch 3. (40)
Round 7: switch yarn color to Grey Marble, repeat round 5. (40)
Round 8: repeat round 4 starting with the ch 3. (40)
Round 9: repeat round 5. (40)
Round 10: switch yarn color to Barley, repeat round 4. (40)
Round 11: ch 1, starting in first st sc, sc in next 8 sts, ch 8 (handle), sk 3 st’s, sl st in next st, sc in next 15 sts, ch 8 (handle), sk 3 st’s, sl st in next st, sc in next 8 sts, sl st to top of first sc. (40)
Round 12: switch yarn to Grey Marble, ch 1, starting in first st sc, sc in next 8 sts, 8 sc in the ch 8 space (handle) from previous round, sc in next 15 sts, 8 sc in the ch 8 space (handle) from previous round, sc in next 8 sts, sl st to top of first sc. (40)
Finishing
To finish up just weave in the loose ends with a yarn needle and fasten off.

How big is this basket – diameter and height?

It was listed in the notes section, but I just moved created a finished size section, so it is easier to find.
The finished basket size is 10″ x 10″ inches + 8″ inches high (with handles)

I do not understand on row 4 it says u are supposed to have 40st ok is that a SC DC in every st or is it every other one please explain

That round ends with 40 total stitches. Each double crochet and single crochet counts as a stitch.

How many skeins of yarn for one basket?
Hi Samantha,
You will need 100 yards. Each skein has 106 yards so you will only need 1 skein if you are doing a solid color basket or two skeins if you’d prefer the color blocked look.

I crocheted pretty tightly for each stitch to make sure it was stiff. You could also crochet with two skeins of yarn at the same time to make it sturdier.

Row 11 doesn’t add up.
7+3+1+15+3+1+7=37. There are 3 missing since the row count is 40. Please explain

There were a few typo’s in that round that must have been there for years! Thank you for finding them. I fixed the pattern changing the 7 sc’s to 8 sc’s. Also, I think you may have forgotten to add the first sc of the round in when adding above so it equals out to 40 now. 🙂

Hi- I’m confused too. It seems that you are not supposed to count the beginning chains on each round as a stitch. But then that messes up the stitch count. On round two I just DC in the first stitch right next to the chain and that worked. But as I got further along I somehow had more than 40 stitches in each round. Can you offer any suggestions? Are you supposed to slip stitch into the beginning chains or not?

I am as confused as Deb. Maybe you can answer the question of why do patterns call for working in the third chain from hook when you could use a magic circle or join the chain and work inside? Thanks!

It all depends on how you prefer to start the round. Some prefer the magic circle, some like to start by joining a chain and others like to chain then work in a certain chain from the hook. It all depends on how the designer designed the pattern. 🙂

Hi! I made this basket the other night and absolutely love it! Do you have any suggestions on how to make a nesting set?
Hi. I’m trying to make your storage basket pattern. On round 2 it says to ch 3 and starting with “4th ch from hook”. The rest of round 2 says to dc in the ch stitches. There are no ch stitches except the first 3 in the instructions. I am going to continue with the assumption that after the 3 ch I am supposed to start doing 2 dc in each dc from round 1. Just thought you may want to check this.
